Bayi berusia dibawah 6 bulan sebaiknya jangan pernah diberikan air untuk diminum, begitu yang diingatkan oleh para ilmuwan dari John Hopkins children’s center di Baltimore kepada para orang tua. Dengan mengkonsumsi air terlalu banyak dapat meningkatkan kondisi yang berbahaya pada bayi, atau yang disebut sebagai intoksikasi air.

Walaupun bayi sangat kecil, mereka memiliki reflex haus atau perangsang untuk minum. Ketika mereka merasa haus dan ingin minum, cairan yang diperlukan untuk diminum adalah ASI (Air Susu Ibu) atau susu formula. Demikian yang dijelaskan oleh dr. Jennifer Anders, seorang ahli gawat darurat anak dari John Hopkins children’s center.

Karena ginjal bayi belum matang, dengan memberi mereka banyak air akan menyebabkan tubuh mereka mengeluarkan natrium akibat kelebihan cairan. Kehilangan natrium dapat mempengaruhi aktifitas otak, sehingga gejala awal dari intoksikasi air adalah iritabilitas (merengek-rengek), mengantuk dan perubahan mental lainnya. Gejala lain yang dapat muncul adalah menurunnya suhu tubuh, edema atau bengkak disekitar wajah dan kejang.

Gejala awal yang muncul memang terkadang kurang jelas, sehingga orang tua baru menyadari ketika bayi mereka kejang. Namun, dengan penanganan yang cepat, gejala kejang kemungkinan tidak akan muncul. Air sebagai minuman sebaiknya tidak diberikan bagi bayi berusia 6 bulan kebawah. Orang tua juga sebaiknya menghindari pemberian formula dengan pengenceran yang berlebihan (over-dilusi), atau minuman anak yang mengandung elektrolit.

Untuk beberapa kasus, mungkin tepat dengan pemberian air dalam jumlah kecil, misalnya keadaan konstipasi (sulit BAB) dan pada saat cuaca panas, namun sebaiknya orang tua mengkonsultasikan hal tersebut terlebih dahulu dengan dokter ahli anak, dan hanya diperbolehkan memberikan 1-2 ons air pada setiap pemberiannya.

Apabila orang tua merasa bayi mereka mengalami intoksikasi air, atau ketika bayi mereka muncul kejang, sebaiknya mereka segera memberikan perhatian secara medis.(klk/yon)
